Opening Reflection

There was a time when you bent yourself into careful shapes just to keep their world calm, mistaking endurance for love and silence for peace. This rite is not about blaming that earlier self; it is about refusing to let them steer your present. Here, you name the version of you who laughed off the sting, who rationalized their sharp edges as your own softness. You are not abandoning that self. You are walking them to the door with tenderness, and staying behind when they leave, finally choosing the you who will not make room for harm.

Invocation

Let the self who endured them step out, while my present self stays rooted.

Method

Set a small mirror before you and place a single item of your own beside it, something that recalls who you were around them: a shirt, a bracelet, a key. Sit comfortably and breathe until your shoulders drop. Picture the version of you who apologized first, who explained away every slight so they could remain unquestioned. Let that image stand behind the item. Speak aloud that this object now belongs to the self who tolerated what you no longer accept. Gently slide the item so it sits just beyond the mirror, as if on the far side of a doorway. Do not drag or fling it; let the movement be deliberate and slow. Look into the mirror and meet your current gaze, the one sitting here now. Say that only this present self has permission to choose what you allow from this day forward. When you are ready, turn the item so it faces away from you and leave it there. You have crossed the threshold by choosing not to follow.

Closure & Aftercare

For the rest of the day, act as though that earlier version of you has somewhere else to be. When old instincts arise, notice them and respond from the self who sat at the mirror, not the one who absorbed everything. You do not need to rehearse speeches or win arguments in your head. Your refusal to tolerate harm is already the spell. Let your body unwind in small, ordinary ways: a stretch, a slow drink of water, early sleep. The work is complete when you no longer reach for the costume they preferred.

Safety Notes

Stay unnamed, breathe slowly, and stop if memories or emotions feel too sharp to hold.

Journaling Follow-up

Describe three moments you shrank yourself to keep their comfort intact.
